DDP Days 2023
The DDP Network conducted its DDP Days meeting in Paris last July 4-6. The DDP Days was an event organized for learning exchanges, presentations of country work, and discussions about the future of the DDP. There were over 80 participants from our partner organizations from Australia, Indonesia, China, Japan, India, Senegal, Nigeria, Argentina, Mexico, and the United States. Also present were our strategic partners from the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, Agence Française de Développement, and the European Commission.
Over the three days, country partners presented their current work on modeling, strategic partners discussed their work related to the DDP’s work, and the network collectively discussed where the DDP network is headed in the next few years. DDP also launched its new brand which better reflects our work in the Global South and makes clear our mission and vision for climate change and development.

DDP presents collective work on international enablers of staying below 1.5°C at SB58 in Bonn
Johannes Svensson, DDP Research fellow, presented a research poster entitled, “International Finance: a key global enabler for ambitious pathways in major emerging economies” last June 2023 at the Bonn climate conference. The poster is a product for the IMAGINE project and summarizes the findings of the paper submitted to the UNFCCC.

Deep Decarbonization Pathways Community Days
The DDP days are invitation-only biannual meetings of the Deep Decarbonization Pathways community, gathering DDP country research teams and close research and strategic partners. These meetings aim to create a space for collective exchanges on issues of common interest beyond the specific requirements of individual projects or activities in which we are engaged. More specifically, these meetings aim to i) ensure that everyone has a comprehensive view of all on-going activities in the DDP initiative, ii) facilitate sharing of experience on progress made and difficulties encountered, iii) discuss the perspectives and strategic objectives we could pursue collectively, notably in the context of the international climate conversations and iv) share information about on-going external initiatives and activities of interest for our work.

ACT-DDP Ambitious national commitments, and strategies of private companies
The ACT initiative and DDP initiative has launched a project at the end of 2019 to build, illustrate and promote tools enabling a dialogue between private companies and governments for a mutual enrichment of their decarbonisation strategies. These final workshops on the same topic, aim to present the principal findings and results of this 2-year program and discuss it with a broad audience of associations, companies, academics and public authorities. Coal phase out/down is a complex transition for coal producing and consuming countries requiring designing and implementing socially just, economically viable and publicly acceptable frame-works. CCS is a relatively new technology, not proven at scale in commercial terms which needs to meet some specific technical requirements such as availability of underground stor-age. Moreover, these choices need to be embedded in a broader context of international de-velopments that may affect the coal sector, including access to finance, international energy markets or trade regulations for high carbon footprint export commodities. With this background this event is intended to seek for answers to coal-based power capaci-ty decarbonization by discussing/sharing ideas and experiences related to the consideration of the previously mentioned challenges.

Responding to Glasgow Climate Pact: Coal phase-down of unabated coal power plant
How to achieve net zero emission is a major political challenge policy-makers are confronted with. One of the sectors that has a critical role in net zero emission endeavor is the energy sector. Among energy sub-sectors the most important one is power generation. A major challenge in decarbonizing this sector in support to the achievement of a net zero economy is how to deal with existing coal-dominant power system. Basically, there are two alternatives to decarbonize it i.e., to phase down coal or to continue relying with coal but equipped with car-bon capture and storage (CCS) technology. Both choices have their own challenges. Coal phase out/down is a complex transition for coal producing and consuming countries requiring designing and implementing socially just, economically viable and publicly acceptable frame-works. CCS is a relatively new technology, not proven at scale in commercial terms which needs to meet some specific technical requirements such as availability of underground storage. Moreover, these choices need to be embedded in a broader context of international developments that may affect the coal sector, including access to finance, international energy markets or trade regulations for high carbon footprint export commodities. With this background this event is intended to seek for answers to coal-based power capacity decarbonization by discussing/sharing ideas and experiences related to the consideration of the previously mentioned challenges.
